When I was a kid, I’d make up songs about everything, much to the annoyance of my elders. I loved music…almost as much as dancing…and everything from rock and roll to classical. There was only one problem; not once was I ever encouraged to play an instrument. I can’t blame my folks; they were spending a fortune on my dance lessons and toe shoes (and braces). But it handicapped my musical inclinations.
Artistic Frustrations
In college, I finally took up my first instrument…bass guitar. I was decent at it, playing along with REM in my basement apartment. But, it was either sing or play, and I preferred singing. Years later, I took up guitar which was mostly a shit show. I tried, I really did. Fortunately, I found a place among “real musicians” by joining the occasional band as the vocalist. But I was still musically frustrated, relying on others to bring my ideas to life.
Enter a Magical Tool
So, was I ever surprised in 2024 to discover something called Band in a Box, a software which provides accompaniment tracks I choose to the songs I write. It’s an incredible tool that liberated all the suppressed songs inside of me. And I found it a lot easier to work with than most actual bandmates. The instrumental tracks are real tracks performed by real studio musicians.
This is not AI and I like to draw the distinction. AI often creates the chord progression, the lyrics and the arrangement and even sings for the person who asks it to. I don’t see this as creative. While it can be fun and fulfilling, I don’t think people using it should declare that they’ve “written a song” as they haven’t done the creative work.
The Name Came
The name Tilted Halo was adopted when during an Energy Healing Cooperative session on Insight Timer, someone mentioned my halo. I laughed and said, “Yeah, sure…tilted!” My sister, who happened to be taking part that day also laughed and quipped, “That’s a fitting nickname for you.” And it stuck. Since then, I learned that there were other artists and projects using the name, so I shortened mine to T ‘ Halo to avoid confusion, ironically causing more…but that’s a long story.
